Navigating child support and Centrelink challenges

December 01, 2025

Sammy, a single mother, was visiting her local library to borrow books for her young daughter when she noticed our Street Law Coffee Van. Curious, she approached and engaged with our Community Engagement Officer. This initial conversation opened the door for Sammy to seek help, particularly around outstanding child support owed to her and her Centrelink entitlements.

After reviewing Sammy’s documents and correspondence, our team identified discrepancies in how her income was being reported and assessed. We advocated on her behalf with Child Support Services to update her income details and pursued strategies to recover any potential tax refund amounts.

This intervention led to a positive outcome where Sammy began receiving child support payments again. Sammy’s case highlights the importance of accessible legal outreach and culturally sensitive support. Through our Street Law program, she was able to receive timely legal assistance that directly improved her financial stability and wellbeing.
